What is Law?

Law is the body of principles recognised and applied by the state in the administration of justice. It is a body of rules to guide human conduct.Laws governing external activities of man may be either social or political.social laws are based on customs.political laws are enacted and enforced by the state.Disobedience to the law involves punishment or penalty inflicted by the government. The policies of the state are expressed through law.Law reflects the sovereignty of the state.
John Austin  regarded law as "a command issued by a superior to an inferior".
T.E.Holland defines law as "the command of an authorized public organ enforced by a sovereign political
    authority".
The universality of law and its enforceable character make it desirable that law should deal with only general situations. It cannot and should not regulate all the aspects of individual life. Many interests of human life can be better regulated by customs, traditions etc.The state aims at general social welfare and so its laws must regulate only general situations of social life. The end of the state is promotion of general welfare and moral perfection of man in society. The end of law is justice.
